From Vision to Victory—How a Community League Became Something Special

A Dream Takes Shape

In October 2025, Nathaniel Holmes had a vision: create a competitive basketball league that would give local athletes a platform to showcase their skills and talents while celebrating the small businesses that make our community thrive. The goal was simple but ambitious—bring people together through basketball, offer a cash prize to reward excellence, and shine a spotlight on local entrepreneurs. Fast forward just a few months, and that vision became reality at Hildebran Gym, where three teams—the Net Poppers, D’ Miracles, and Visine—would battle it out for the inaugural Catawba Valley Adult Basketball League championship and a $1,000 cash prize. What unfolded was nothing short of spectacular.

The Teams

đŸ”” Net Poppers (15-3)

The dominant force all season long, the Net Poppers combined depth, shooting, and championship composure. Led by scoring threats like Dez J., Maury P., Matt E., and Dustin H., they finished atop the standings and earned a first-round playoff bye.

🟱 D’ Miracles (14-6)

The team that wouldn’t quit. D’ Miracles rode a red-hot finish into the playoffs, led by league MVP Walt W. and a deep roster featuring Kaleb H., Von E., Maurice B., and Anthony I. They swept Visine in the semi-finals and pushed the Net Poppers to the absolute limit in the championship.

🟡 Visine (1-16)

Despite their record, Visine never backed down. Que R. was the league’s most efficient scorer at 20.8 PPG, and players like JB, Chubbs L., Leon O., and Stetson brought fight and heart every single game. They may not have won many games, but they earned everyone’s respect.

In a best-of-3 series, D’ Miracles advanced with back-to-back wins:

  • Game 2: D’ Miracles 81, Visine 72 — Que R. dropped 28 in a losing effort, while Anthony I. (23 pts) and Maurice B. (18 pts) powered D’ Miracles.

Kaleb H. went supernova for D’ Miracles, dropping 30 points and hitting 6 three-pointers in a heroic performance. Anthony I. added 18, and Von E. chipped in 15. But it wasn’t enough. The Net Poppers’ depth proved to be the difference. Jacques C. delivered the game of his life with 18 points on 6 threes, Matt E. dominated inside with 17, and Maury P. steadied the ship with 15. Every possession mattered, every bucket was contested, and when the final buzzer sounded, the Net Poppers had escaped with a one-point victory. Final Score: 78-77. For a long time, local hoopers haven’t had a place to showcase their skills, especially outside of school or rec leagues. I grew up running courts in the parks of Durham, NC, with OG’s who taught me about life, respect, and the value of community. I even had the chance to hoop with future stars like Amar’e Stoudemire during his prep school days. Those experiences shaped me—and the connections I made off the court have had just as much impact as the games themselves.Now, I want to recreate that energy and opportunity here. This league is about building bonds, supporting each other, and helping everyone achieve success in life—on and off the court.
